Project Overview
Semper Services delivered a critical street lighting upgrade and safety remediation programme at a major NHS hospital site in London. The project involved the replacement of approximately 125 street lighting units with energy-efficient LED technology, delivering significant energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint. This was a comprehensive programme requiring precise delivery with a primary focus on road traffic safety and operational compliance.

Scope of Works
Replacement of approximately 125 streetlights
Complete rewiring with 1.5mm flex cable and installation of IP68‑rated inline connectors
Overnight works necessitated by high hospital footfall and vehicle traffic
Replacement of damaged fuse carriers & RCBO isolation
Comprehensive testing: Earth loop, Voltage, & Insulation
Solution / Delivery
Executed via a strict safety protocol to manage high-risk electrical remediation:
Use of cherry pickers with Permit to Work systems
Safe electrical isolation at lighting pillars prior to works
Draw-wire method used to replace non-compliant short cabling
Outcome
The project successfully reinstated approximately 125 street lights, ensuring full electrical compliance and safety.
Critical defects, including missing earth connections and water-damaged components, were rectified, and the system was fully certified, providing reliable, energy-efficient exterior lighting for the hospital environment.
Project Challenges
Rectifying dangerous defects (missing earth connections, water ingress, short circuitry)
